The grape variety Bovale

Bovale is a red grape variety primarily cultivated in Sardinia, Italy, where it plays a significant role in the island’s winemaking tradition. The varietal is known for producing wines with a deep ruby color and an aromatic profile featuring notes of juicy red berries, black cherry, plum, and subtle spicy undertones such as black pepper and licorice. On the palate, Bovale wines are medium- to full-bodied, showcasing supple tannins, vibrant acidity, and nuanced flavors of ripe dark fruit, cocoa, and sometimes earthy or herbal nuances.

The principal winegrowing region for Bovale is the Mandrolisai DOC in central Sardinia, as well as the Campidano area. These wines may range from youthful and fresh styles, designed for early consumption, to more structured examples suitable for aging, often seeing brief oak maturation.
