Ormeasco, primarily grown in the Ligurian region of northwest Italy, is a distinctive grape variety closely related to Dolcetto. Renowned for its deep ruby hue, Ormeasco wines display an aromatic profile characterized by vibrant notes of wild cherry, blackberry, and plum, often complemented by hints of violet, almond, and a subtle touch of spice. On the palate, these wines are medium-bodied, boasting soft tannins, lively acidity, and a pleasantly bitter finish that adds complexity.
The finest examples originate from the Ormeasco di Pornassio DOC in the province of Imperia, where the cooler, hillside vineyards help preserve the grape’s freshness and aromatic intensity. Ormeasco is most commonly crafted into dry red wines but may also be found in lightly sparkling (frizzante) and rosé (rosato) styles, each reflecting the grape’s expressive character and local winemaking traditions.
Ormeasco pairs exceptionally well with Ligurian cuisine. Recommended food matches include mushroom risotto, braised rabbit, grilled sausages, and mature cheeses. Its vibrant acidity and subtle bitterness also make it a superb companion for tomato-based pasta dishes and roasted vegetables, accentuating flavors and balancing richer ingredients.
