Viognier is a highly aromatic white grape variety renowned for its expressive floral and fruit-driven profile. On the nose, Viognier typically offers notes of peach, apricot, honeysuckle, orange blossom, and sometimes subtle hints of ginger and musk. On the palate, it displays a rich and creamy texture, and although generally dry, it can present a hint of sweetness, low to moderate acidity, and a notable lushness.
Originating from France’s Rhône Valley, particularly the northern appellations such as Condrieu and Château-Grillet, Viognier is now also prominent in California, Australia, and South America. It thrives in warm climates that allow its intense aromatics to develop fully.
Viognier wines are often made as varietal bottlings, though it is sometimes blended with other Rhône varieties. Styles range from medium-bodied, unoaked interpretations to richer, oak-aged expressions, and it may also be produced as a late-harvest or dessert wine.
Recommended pairings include grilled seafood, roasted chicken, pork tenderloin with fruit compote, spiced Asian dishes, and creamy cheeses. Its exuberant aromatics and full body make it a versatile match for dishes featuring aromatic herbs or subtle spices.
