Malvasia Istriana is a distinguished white grape variety mostly associated with the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia, as well as northeastern Italy and parts of Slovenia. It produces wines renowned for their vibrant aromatic profile, featuring pronounced notes of white peach, ripe apple, acacia blossom, and subtle citrus. Hints of Mediterranean herbs and a delicate almond undertone add complexity, while the palate is typically medium-bodied, fresh, and well-structured, with a balanced acidity and a clean, mineral-driven finish.
Primarily cultivated in Istria, Malvasia Istriana is also found in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Collio region of Italy, where it thrives on coastal breezes and sun-drenched slopes. The grape is most commonly vinified as a still dry white wine, but it can also be crafted as a rich skin-contact (orange) wine or occasionally as a sparkling style.
Malvasia Istriana’s versatility makes it a superb partner for seafood dishes, shellfish, risottos, and light Mediterranean fare. Its fresh acidity also complements poultry, soft cheeses, and vegetable-based appetizers. To showcase its aromatic vitality, serve slightly chilled, revealing the grape’s signature elegance and regional character.
