Vinhão is a distinctive red grape variety native to Portugal, particularly renowned in the Vinho Verde region of the country’s northwest. This grape is celebrated for producing deeply colored, almost opaque wines that stand out for their vivid purple hues. The aromatic profile of Vinhão is pronounced, featuring intense notes of dark berries, blackcurrant, ripe plum, and hints of wild herbs and peppery spice. On the palate, Vinhão wines are robust and lively, characterized by high acidity and moderate to firm tannins, lending them a pleasantly rustic structure and a refreshing finish, often with a subtle earthy undertone.
Vinhão is primarily grown in the Minho region, especially in subregions such as Monção and Melgaço. Though mostly vinified as a varietal wine, Vinhão is also used in blends to impart color and acidity.
These wines are typically made in dry, slightly sparkling (vinho verde tinto) styles, but more structured still versions are increasingly common. Vinhão pairs exceptionally well with rich and flavorful dishes, such as Portuguese roasted meats, grilled sausages, spicy stews, and aged cheeses. Its acidity and firm structure complement fatty and savory flavors, heightening the dining experience.
