The grape variety Carignan

Carignan is a classic Mediterranean grape variety renowned for its deep color, vibrant acidity, and robust tannic structure. In the glass, Carignan often presents an aromatic profile marked by dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry, complemented by notes of plum, licorice, violet, and earthy undertones. Hints of pepper, dried herbs, and sometimes a spicy edge lend further complexity to its bouquet.

Originally from Spain but most notable in southern France—particularly Languedoc-Roussillon—Carignan thrives in warm, dry climates and is also cultivated in Sardinia (where it is known as Carignano), California, and parts of South America. Traditionally, Carignan was used as a blending grape to provide color and acidity, but older vines now produce impressive single-varietal wines.

Carignan-based wines range from rustic, medium-bodied reds to more refined, concentrated expressions from old vines. These wines offer a refreshing acidity and firm tannins, making them well-suited for food pairings. Recommended with grilled meats, hearty stews, game, or savory Mediterranean dishes, Carignan also complements roasted vegetables, aged cheeses, and spicy sausages, making it highly versatile at the table.
