Cinsault is a versatile red grape variety renowned for its fresh, aromatic profile and smooth palate. In the glass, Cinsault wines typically exhibit bright red fruit aromas such as raspberry, strawberry, and cherry, often complemented by floral notes of violet and subtle hints of spice or earthy undertones. The palate is marked by a light to medium body, soft tannins, and moderate acidity, making these wines exceptionally approachable and food-friendly.
Cinsault thrives in warm, dry climates and is predominantly grown in Southern France, especially in the Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence regions. It also plays an important role in the vineyards of South Africa, where it was once widely known as "Hermitage," and is found in parts of North Africa, Lebanon, and Australia.
Traditionally, Cinsault is used both for varietal wines and as a blending component, particularly in rosé and lighter red blends, where it imparts freshness and aromatic lift. Classic Provençal rosés based on Cinsault are especially celebrated for their crisp, delicate fruit profile. When pairing with food, Cinsault excels alongside Mediterranean cuisine, roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, and light pasta dishes, enhancing the meal with its supple character and bright fruit.
