Grenache is a versatile and widely planted red grape variety, renowned for producing wines with a medium to full body and generous fruit-driven profiles. On the nose and palate, Grenache typically exhibits vibrant aromas of ripe red berries, particularly strawberry and raspberry, accented by hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and subtle spice. The wines often display moderate acidity, soft tannins, and a touch of warmth from its tendency toward higher alcohol levels.
Originating in Spain (where it is known as Garnacha), Grenache has become a cornerstone of several renowned wine regions. It thrives in France, particularly in the Southern Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône appellations. In Spain, it is predominant in Rioja, Priorat, and Aragon, while excellent examples also arise from Australia and California.
Grenache is commonly crafted into varietal wines or blended, most famously with Syrah and Mourvèdre to create the classic GSM blend. Its expression ranges from youthful, juicy reds to complex, age-worthy wines and even flavorful rosés.
Ideal pairings include herbed roast chicken, grilled lamb, charcuterie, and Mediterranean cuisine, allowing Grenache’s fruit and spice to harmonize beautifully with savory dishes.
