Macabeo, also known as Viura in Spain, is a versatile white grape variety renowned for its fresh, delicate character. It displays a vibrant aromatic profile marked by notes of green apple, pear, citrus, and sometimes subtle floral and herbal undertones. On the palate, Macabeo wines are generally light to medium-bodied with crisp acidity, offering flavors of lemon zest, stone fruits, and hints of almond or fennel in certain expressions. Predominant growing regions include Spain’s Rioja and Catalonia (notably for Cava), as well as southern France, particularly in Languedoc-Roussillon.
In Rioja, Viura is commonly used for both young, unoaked whites and more complex, oak-aged versions that develop nuances of vanilla and nuts with age. In Catalonia, Macabeo is a fundamental component in the traditional blend for sparkling Cava, contributing freshness and balance.
Macabeo-based wines pair exceptionally well with seafood, shellfish, light poultry dishes, paella, and a variety of tapas. Their vibrant acidity and moderate alcohol content also complement soft cheeses and Mediterranean cuisine, making Macabeo a highly versatile option for food pairing.
