Verdejo is a renowned white grape variety originating from the Rueda region in Spain, where it has become synonymous with fresh, vibrant white wines. On the nose, Verdejo often displays intense aromas of citrus fruits such as lime and grapefruit, interwoven with herbal and floral notes like fennel, anise, and white blossoms. It typically features subtle underlying hints of stone fruits, such as peach or apricot, and sometimes a touch of minerality.
On the palate, Verdejo wines are admired for their crisp acidity, medium to full body, and longstanding freshness. They often present flavors of green apple, pear, and tropical fruits, finishing with a slight almond-like bitterness that adds complexity and character.
The primary winegrowing region for Verdejo is Rueda in Castilla y León, but small plantings exist in other Spanish DOs and select New World vineyards. Verdejo is most commonly crafted as a dry, unoaked white wine, though barrel-aged styles and sparkling versions are increasingly found.
Verdejo’s bright acidity and aromatic complexity make it an excellent companion for seafood, shellfish, sushi, salads, goat cheese, and dishes featuring herbs and fresh vegetables. Its versatility also pairs well with light poultry and Asian cuisine.
