Chenin Blanc is a versatile white grape variety celebrated for its vibrant acidity and remarkable adaptability. On the nose, it typically reveals expressive aromas of green apple, quince, honeysuckle, and subtle floral notes, often accompanied by hints of honey and lanolin with age. The palate ranges from crisp and refreshing to richly textured, displaying flavors of yellow apple, pear, stone fruit, and occasionally tropical undertones such as pineapple or guava.
Originally from the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc thrives in regions like Vouvray, Anjou, and Saumur. Its adaptability has led to significant plantings in South Africa – where it is known as Steen – as well as in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
Chenin Blanc is renowned for its wide range of wine styles: from bone-dry and sparkling to lusciously sweet botrytized wines. Its natural acidity and aromatic complexity make it suitable for both unoaked and oaked expressions, as well as extended aging.
Ideal food pairings include shellfish, white fish, chicken dishes with light sauces, goat cheese, and mildly spiced Asian cuisine. The grape’s bright acidity beautifully complements creamy or tangy elements, enhancing a variety of gastronomic experiences.
