Monastrell, known internationally as Mourvèdre, is a red grape variety prized for its deep color, robust structure, and complex aromatics. The grape delivers wines with rich aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, plum, and subtle hints of dried herbs, black pepper, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Monastrell typically presents a full body, pronounced tannins, and refreshing acidity, often accompanied by flavors of licorice, cocoa, and game.
Monastrell thrives in warm, dry climates. Its principal regions include southeastern Spain, particularly Jumilla, Yecla, and Bullas, where it is at its most expressive. It is also widely cultivated in France’s Bandol appellation and increasingly found in California and Australia.
This grape is primarily used for bold, structured red wines, though it also contributes to blends, especially in the southern Rhône, and may be crafted into rich rosés. Monastrell wines are well-suited to aging, developing greater complexity and integration over time.
Recommended pairings include grilled lamb, beef stews, spicy sausages, roasted vegetables, and hearty Mediterranean cuisine. Its depth and spice complement robust dishes, making it an excellent choice for flavorful, protein-rich meals.
