Mazuela, also known internationally as Carignan, is a red grape variety celebrated for its deeply colored wines and distinctive character. Aromatically, Mazuela displays notes of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and ripe plum balanced by hints of licorice, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness. On the palate, it offers vibrant acidity, robust tannins, and a firm structure, often complemented by spicy undertones and a touch of smokiness.
This grape is predominantly cultivated in northeastern Spain, particularly in the Rioja and Cariñena regions, as well as in Priorat. It also thrives in southern France, especially in Languedoc-Roussillon, where it plays a key role in classic blends.
Mazuela is most commonly found in structured red blends, lending color, freshness, and aging potential. In Rioja, it is often blended with Tempranillo and Garnacha, while in southern France, it partners with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Occasionally, single-varietal Mazuela wines are produced, showcasing its full-bodied and rustic style.
Food pairings include hearty meats such as grilled lamb, braised beef, and game, along with aged cheeses and savory Mediterranean dishes. Its acidity and tannin profile also complement rich, tomato-based sauces and roasted vegetables.
