The grape variety Moscatel

Moscatel, known internationally as Muscat, is one of the world’s oldest and most aromatic grape varieties. Renowned for its pronounced floral bouquet, Moscatel wines showcase intense aromas of orange blossom, honeysuckle, rose petals, and ripe stone fruits such as apricot and peach. On the palate, these wines often deliver a harmonious balance of luscious fruitiness and crisp acidity. Subtle notes of citrus zest and exotic spices may also emerge, contributing to the grape’s vibrant character.

Moscatel thrives in Mediterranean climates and is widely cultivated in regions such as Spain (notably in Valencia, Málaga, and Jerez), Portugal (Setúbal), Italy (Piedmont), and France (Alsace). The grape is highly versatile, giving rise to a variety of wine styles including dry, off-dry, sweet, and fortified wines.

Typical expressions include refreshing Moscatel Blanco table wines, lush late-harvest and dessert wines, and rich, amber-hued fortified wines like Moscatel de Setúbal. Its natural sweetness and aromatic complexity make Moscatel an excellent pairing for fruit-based desserts, blue cheeses, spicy Asian cuisine, and lightly spiced poultry dishes, enhancing both the food and the wine with vibrant, layered flavors.
