The grape variety Chiavennasca

Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo in the Valtellina region of northern Italy, produces wines renowned for their elegance and complexity. The aromatic profile features striking notes of wild cherry, raspberry, dried rose petals, and hints of violet, underscored by gentle spice, leather, and subtle earthiness. On the palate, Chiavennasca displays a vibrant acidity and firm, yet silky tannins, with flavors ranging from tart red fruit to dried herbs and a mineral backbone that reflects its alpine terroir.

The principal vineyard area is Valtellina in Lombardy, where steep, terraced slopes along the Adda River impart a unique character to the grape. The most notable wine styles include Valtellina Superiore—structured, age-worthy reds—and Sforzato di Valtellina, an opulent, dried-grape wine akin to Amarone but showcasing Nebbiolo’s finesse.
