Red Grape Variety

Slarina is an ancient red grape variety native to the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Though nearly forgotten, Slarina is experiencing a renaissance among forward-thinking winemakers. In the glass, Slarina typically produces wines with a bright ruby color and a distinctive aromatic profile featuring notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and dried herbs, supported by subtle floral undertones and a hint of spice. The palate is fresh and vibrant, balancing red berry fruit with lively acidity, moderate tannins, and a persistent mineral finish.

Piemonte remains the principal region for Slarina cultivation, particularly in the provinces of Alessandria and Asti. Here, the grape thrives on well-exposed, calcareous soils under temperate climates. Slarina wines are most commonly crafted in a dry, still style, although select producers are experimenting with lightly sparkling or rosé expressions, each capturing the grape’s natural elegance and finesse.

Slarina pairs seamlessly with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and subtle earthiness complement grilled poultry, roasted pork, mushroom risotto, and semi-hard cheeses. The wine’s delicate structure also makes it an excellent companion for charcuterie boards and tomato-based pasta dishes.
