Žametovka, also known as “Black Velvet,” is one of Slovenia’s oldest and most historically significant red grape varieties. Renowned for its deep ruby color, this grape produces wines with a delicate bouquet characterized by notes of ripe red cherries, wild berries, gentle floral undertones, and a touch of subtle spice. On the palate, Žametovka wines are typically light to medium-bodied, offering lively acidity and supple tannins that frame flavors of juicy raspberry, soft plum, and a hint of earthiness.
The primary growing region for Žametovka is the picturesque Podravje wine region in northeastern Slovenia, particularly around the towns of Maribor and Ptuj. Here, its vineyards thrive in cool-climate conditions, allowing the grape to express fresh fruit-driven profiles and elegant structure.
Žametovka is most commonly vinified as a varietal still red wine, but it is also occasionally used in blends or crafted into rosé styles. The wines are typically enjoyed young to preserve their vibrant fruit character.
Recommended food pairings include grilled poultry, roasted pork, charcuterie, hearty vegetable dishes, mild cheeses, and traditional Central European fare. Its lively acidity and subtle tannins make it a versatile companion at the table.
