Red Grape Variety

Mourvèdre, also known as Mataro or Monastrell, is a robust red grape variety originally from Spain, now widely cultivated in regions such as southern France (notably Provence and the Rhône Valley), Spain’s Jumilla and Yecla, and parts of Australia and California. The grape typically produces deeply colored wines with high tannins and significant aging potential. Its aromatic profile is complex and distinctive, offering notes of blackberries, blueberries, black pepper, game, leather, and earthy undertones, often developing savory and herbal characteristics with cellaring.

Mourvèdre is famous for its role in GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) blends, contributing structure and depth, but also shines as a single varietal, particularly in Bandol AOC where wines exhibit intensity and elegance. The typical style is full-bodied with pronounced acidity and a rich, chewy texture.

These wines pair wonderfully with bold, flavorful dishes. Recommended pairings include grilled or roasted meats, game, hearty stews, lamb, and Mediterranean cuisine rich in herbs and olive oil. Mature Mourvèdre complements aged cheeses and charcuterie, while youthful expressions work beautifully with barbecued foods and spicy sausages. Serve slightly below room temperature to enhance the wine’s vibrant aromas.
