Mavro is an ancient red grape variety predominantly cultivated in Cyprus, where it is integral to the island’s winemaking heritage. The name "Mavro" simply means "black" in Greek, a nod to the grape’s deep, dark skin. On the nose, Mavro wines typically offer aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries, complemented by subtle spicy notes and hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, they tend to be medium-bodied with soft tannins, refreshing acidity, and flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and sometimes a delicate earthiness.
The primary wine region for Mavro is the Commandaria region in Cyprus, famed for producing the world-renowned Commandaria dessert wine—a luscious, sweet wine made from sun-dried Mavro and Xynisteri grapes. Mavro is also used to produce dry red wines, light rosés, and traditional fortified wines.
Mavro wines pair exceptionally well with a variety of Mediterranean dishes. Recommended food pairings include grilled lamb, savory meat stews, roasted vegetables, mature cheeses, and dishes featuring aromatic spices and herbs such as oregano and thyme. For Commandaria, pair with dried fruits, nuts, or rich chocolate desserts for an indulgent experience.
