The grape variety Vieux Carignan

Vieux Carignan, an ancient red grape variety, is renowned for its deeply colored, robust wines that deliver a distinctive aromatic and flavor profile. On the nose, Vieux Carignan exhibits pronounced notes of dark berries—such as blackberry and black cherry—complemented by hints of dried herbs, earth, and subtle spice. The palate is typically medium to full-bodied, offering vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and layered flavors of ripe plum, licorice, and sometimes a savory, rustic edge reflecting its old-vine origins.

Primarily cultivated in southern France, especially in Languedoc-Roussillon, Vieux Carignan thrives in warm, sun-drenched climates and is also found in select vineyards in Spain, Sardinia, and parts of California and South America. The grape yields a range of wine styles, from intense, age-worthy reds—often made from venerable, low-yielding vines—to lighter, approachable blends where its structure provides balance and depth.
