The grape variety Fogoneu

Fogoneu is an intriguing red grape variety indigenous to the Balearic Islands, most notably Mallorca. It is prized for its pale garnet hue and delicate structure, typically contributing elegance rather than power to local blends. On the nose, Fogoneu offers subtle aromas of red berries—particularly wild strawberry and cherry—alongside hints of herbs, dried flowers and a touch of earthiness. The palate is light-bodied, often with soft tannins and a lively acidity, resulting in a wine that feels fresh and approachable yet displays underlying complexity.

Fogoneu’s principal home is Mallorca, where it is frequently blended with grape varieties such as Manto Negro and Callet to create balanced regional wines. However, it is increasingly being vinified as a single varietal, highlighting its distinct personality.

Typical styles include light red wines that are best enjoyed young, as well as rosés that capture the grape’s vibrancy and aromatic nuance. These wines are especially well-suited to Mediterranean cuisine; they pair harmoniously with grilled fish or vegetables, light poultry dishes, and cured meats like Jamón Ibérico, complementing subtle flavours without overpowering the palate.
