The grape variety Borracal

Borracal is a traditional Portuguese red grape variety predominantly cultivated in the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal, with smaller plantings in the Dão and Douro areas. This relatively rare variety is valued for its ability to produce wines with a lively personality and distinctive character. On the nose, Borracal wines reveal vibrant aromas of ripe red berries—cherry, raspberry, and red currant—often intertwined with notes of wild herbs, subtle pepper, and a faint hint of earthiness. On the palate, the wines tend to be medium-bodied with refreshing acidity, soft tannins, and a crisp, juicy finish. Borracal is typically blended with other native grapes such as Vinhão and Espadeiro to craft the region’s renowned Vinho Verde reds, but it can also be vinified as a varietal wine, offering a pure expression of its fruit-forward and aromatic style.
