Red Grape Variety

Odesa Black, known as Odessa Black in English, is a unique red grape variety originating from Ukraine, primarily cultivated in the Odesa region along the Black Sea coast. It is renowned for producing deeply colored wines with a distinctive aromatic profile. On the nose, Odessa Black is expressive, offering intense notes of dark berries—especially blackcurrant and blackberry—intertwined with hints of violets, black pepper, and subtle undertones of tobacco and spices. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, delivering flavors of ripe black fruits, plum, and delicate herbal nuances, balanced by vibrant acidity and firm but refined tannins.

The primary winemaking regions are southern Ukraine and select parts of Moldova, though plantings can also be found in experimental vineyards across Eastern Europe. Typical wine styles include robust, dry varietal reds and expressive blends, sometimes aged in oak to amplify complexity and structure.

Odessa Black wines pair exceptionally well with red meats such as lamb or beef, game dishes, roasted vegetables, and hard cheeses. They also complement spiced or smoked fare, making them a versatile choice for flavorful, hearty cuisine. Serve slightly below room temperature to showcase the wine’s depth and aromatic intensity.
