Veltlínské zelené, known internationally as Grüner Veltliner, is a prominent white grape variety originating from Central Europe, particularly Austria and the Czech Republic. The varietal is highly regarded for its fresh, vibrant profile marked by citrus aromas of lemon and lime, complemented by green apple, white pepper, and delicate herbal notes. Hints of flint and minerality often appear, especially in wines from cooler climates.
The primary winegrowing regions for Veltlínské zelené include Lower Austria’s Weinviertel and Wachau, as well as Moravia in the Czech Republic. The grape produces a range of styles, from light and crisp, easy-drinking wines to complex, full-bodied examples suited to aging. Classic expressions are dry, with lively acidity and a clean, refreshing finish, though select late-harvest and reserve bottlings offer greater ripeness and structure.
Veltlínské zelené wines pair exceptionally well with fresh salads, simple seafood dishes, and light poultry. Their bright acidity and peppery character make them an outstanding match for Asian cuisine, especially spicy Thai and Vietnamese flavors, as well as classic Central European fare like schnitzel or roast pork.
